The requirement from the city of Stockholm

The requirement from the city of Stockholm is that vision for the development of Stockholm, “Vision 2030”, established the city’s ambition to become a world-class city. Within this process, there is a need for development within a range of areas, amongst these the ability to stage events. In order for Stockholm to achieve the goal of being a world-class event city, there is a requirement, amongst other things, for new area solutions. The public interest for “allsvensk” (premiere) football is large and the existing club arenas have shortcomings both regarding capacity and security. An investment in a new arena needs to satisfy both sporting and cultural requirements and should also strengthen business in the city.

A new arena or a renovated Söderstadion

Stockholm’s requirement for an arena that strengthens its position as an event city, and at the same time allows international football matches to be played, has been discussed intensely since the start of the 90’s, when general wear and tear made it necessary to decide on the future of Söderstadion. The choice is between renovating Söderstadion, built during the 60’s, or building a new arena. A renovation of Söderstadion is calculated to cost approximately 250 MSEK, but even then it would not fulfil the requirements of UEFA and FIFA as far as capacity and security are concerned for international football matches. For this reason, several inquiries have studied the prerequisites for building a new arena. The result of all these inquiries has been that the best place to build such and arena would be in Globen City. With this as a basis, it has been decided that work for a new sport and event arena should continue.

Motive for building a new arena

Globen City is already the leading event area for northern Europe. However, its shortcomings for larger events has long been an unanswered problem for the capital. A new and larger arena would create the possibility of attracting larger events to the capital. With the The Stockholm Arena, Globen City would become an optimal event area that offers both arrangers and visitors a wide combination of arenas with unique possibilities. With the The Stockholm Arena, Globen City would be able to offer event arenas from 3,500 visitors in the Annex to 40,000 visitors in The Stockholm Arena. This capacity and variety would allow the different arenas to complement each other in a synergetic way.
